FAQs

What is the difference between a consignment gallery and a traditional gallery?

Consignment galleries rent space for artists to display and sell their work.  Some consignment galleries also take a commission on those sales, Calendula Gallery does not.  At Calendula Gallery, Lavender Road is designated for consignment .

Traditional galleries exhibit artists without charging the artists, and takes a commission on items sold.  The Poppy Room is our traditional gallery.  We take a 30% commission from sales for these exhibits.

How do I get Paid from my Sales?

Staff from Calendula Gallery take all the sales electronically through square.  At least once a month, the sales revenues, which are sorted by artist, are sent to each artist electronically through Zelle, minus any electronic transfer fees. Most banks offer Zelle as an easy way to transfer funds without additional fees. If Zelle is not available at your bank, we will mail checks monthly instead.

How many months is a contract for consignment?

We ask for a four month commitment and then contracts go month to month. Artists may remain on after the four month period as long as they want.

Can I have a display of prints or other small items?

Generally yes for prints although we do need to approve the display itself to make sure it isn’t blocking other artists work or causing difficulties for patrons to move about.  In addition, we have two large format print holders artists can use.  Smaller items, such as stickers or jewelry are not encouraged unless the artist has a self enclosed case to help deter theft.

Who installs my work on the walls?

Artists are responsible for their own installation and are asked to bring supplies specific to their work’s needs.  We do keep a collection of supplies on hand for those that “forget”.   Ladders are available in the gallery.

Who prints the placards (title tags)?

Generally placards are the responsibility of the artist.  A digital template will be sent to the artists to provide some standardization for the gallery.  For artists that may not have access to a printer we can help with this process.

Can I put up an artist statement?

In both Lavender Road and The Herb Garden you may generally do as you wish with your own space.

Can I be turned down for the Consignment Galleries?

Calendula does have high standards for exhibiting artists.  In addition, we may be juggling a number of artists on the waiting list or simply have too many artists doing very similar work at the time you applied.
